History

 History Lead: Mr J Lynes

Our History curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills in understanding different historical concepts, applying their knowledge to a range of purposeful tasks, and thinking critically as historians. They will understand historical enquiry and how we can find out about the past through interpreting a range of primary and secondary sources. Children will develop key vocabulary linked to historical topics and gain an understanding of changes over time by linking different concepts across a range of time periods. They will construct a secure chronological narrative, spanning from the earliest times to the present day, and understand how each historical period fits within a broader context.

Children will know how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world. By the end of the curriculum, they will: demonstrate understanding of significant aspects of global history, describe the nature of ancient civilisations, explain the expansion and dissolution of empires, and identify the characteristic features, achievements, and legacies of past non-European societies.

History lessons enable children to explore historical events, civilisations and significant individuals while deepening their ability to think and work as historians. Through engaging and immersive experiences—such as roleplay, discussion, and the analysis of evidence—children will be encouraged to question, interpret and draw conclusions about the past. It is paramount that history learning is purposeful and builds on pupils’ prior knowledge and understanding. Pupils will be clear about intended outcomes and will reflect on and evaluate their work, considering how effectively they have applied their knowledge, used historical vocabulary, and developed their understanding over time, as well as how they can continue to improve.

History Curriculum Vocabulary Progression

Spiritual Development

History supports spiritual development by encouraging students to reflect on human experiences, beliefs, and values across time. By studying significant events, individuals, and civilisations, students can explore questions about identity, purpose, and legacy. It allows them to consider how people in the past made sense of the world and their place within it.

Moral Development

History develops moral understanding by exposing students to ethical dilemmas and injustices from the past, such as war, inequality, and discrimination. Students are encouraged to evaluate actions and decisions, consider consequences, and form reasoned judgments about right and wrong while understanding historical context.

Social Development

History promotes social development by helping students understand how societies are formed, organised, and changed over time. Discussions and debates about historical events encourage collaboration, empathy, and respect for different viewpoints, helping students relate past social structures to modern society.

Cultural Development

History enhances cultural development by exposing students to a wide range of cultures, traditions, and beliefs from different periods and places. This helps students appreciate diversity and understand how cultural identities have evolved and influenced the modern world.
